Emotions + Oils

emotional support, mental health, health, wellness, feelings kit young living, young living essential oils, valor, forgiveness, release, present time, inner child, harmony,

If you're an avid reader of our blog, it's no surprise to you that I've been dealing with a lot of grief and emotional battles in the last year, since losing my husband. Last summer, I was at a breaking point. I was at a point where I was overly sensitive during my time of the month. I was on birth control to help regulate my hormones and help me lessen the pain of my cramps, but it was actually counterintuitive.

If I'm honest, I never even considered the side effects of birth control at this point. Joel and I had just decided that since we had a teenager now, it probably would be a good idea to play it safe and not have a little one to chase too. I didn't think about the hormones creating adverse effects on my emotional health. I was a hott mess.

I carried on for months without realizing the pattern of emotional turmoil just a day or two before my cycle and then one day it hit me like a ton of bricks. I wondered if the issue was the birth control. In that moment, I was ready to call a counselor, get on prescription drugs to help me cope with the loss for a little while. I was a blurbing mess--- and that's how I knew something needed to change.

I started looking into my toolbox- the things I had in my reach. I had heard of people using oils for emotional support but I hadn't bought in yet to that idea. I had been trying to detox my home of chemicals over the summer, and the last thing I wanted to do was to put more chemicals into my body in the form of medication. And, I thought I truly had a good support system with people I could really talk to about my real, raw, unpretty feelings and emotions about grief. I was willing to give it a try.

I bought Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils and started to hone in on the process of using oils for emotional support. Here's what I've learned...

Essential Oils

Let's cover the basics here. "Oils are... the lifeblood of a plant. They protect the plant from disease, provide nutrients and help fight off anything it doesn't want! It keeps the plant (or tree, fruit, bark, root, etc.) healthy and functioning at its best!

Essential oils should smell exactly like the plant they come from – nothing more, nothing less. Often, companies will add things like vanillin to make them smell sweeter. Do your oils smell like a plant or a dessert? If it says 100% pure but it smells sweet, chances are something else has been added. This means that the therapeutic properties are either decreased or nonexistent." -Taylor Quigg

That is why the Seed to Seal Commitment is so important. I only use YOUNG LIVING Essential Oils. Why? Because of their transparency. No other brand can match their processes. You can visit their farms and get an up-close look at their distillery process. They test their oils over and over and then have an outside source do so as well. All of these factors make a huge difference in quality and effectiveness.

All oils are NOT created equal.

Here is what makes Young Living different:

- YL farms and partner farms abide by strict standards.

- YL selects the strongest seeds from strong thriving plants. They will not over-produce for quantity or stock needs. They only produce what the healthy plants will provide.

- Pest Control: All plants are hand-weeded and use oils on plants to avoid the use of toxic chemicals.

- Plants are harvested at peak times to ensure quality oils, down to the hour.

- Distilleries are on site to prevent contamination and process without chemicals.

- Every batch has several tests to pass and done 3 times each by YL and outside parties. If it doesn’t meet their standards because of weather conditions or for any other reason, it does not get used.

Oils + Science

"When talking about emotions, we must mention the limbic system. The limbic system is a system of nerves and networks in the brain that controls basic emotions and drives. It is the emotional brain. It supports five major functions: emotions, behavior, motivation, long-term memory, and sense of smell.

Essential oils can be used to tap directly into the limbic system to stimulate memories and emotions. As you inhale essential oils, the tiny molecules enter the nasal cavity and pass by the olfactory bulb. Your olfactory bulb is a part of your limbic system and therefore your response to an aroma is going to be emotional before it can be rational.

This is great news! That means you can use essential oils to recall memories, both good and bad. If they are bad, you can use the oils to help you release cellular memories stored in the body, allowing you to process and move past them.

We all regularly come in contact with reactions to smells. You walk into the house at dinner time and smell your favorite meal being prepared. Your emotions are instantly triggered to the fond memories you have of that meal and you feel joy.

You smell the cologne your grandfather used to wear. It instantly triggers emotions based on your relationship. If you had a good relationship, you may feel emotions like love and joy. If you had a bad relationship or he has passed away, you may feel anger or sadness.

Now that we have covered a little science, let’s dive into these powerful blends and talk about how they can be used."- GROworkspace

3 Ways to Use Oils

Aromatically

Using oils aromatically, in a diffuser, is amazing for emotional support. If you need a little courage to help get you in the mood, your diffuser may just do the trick.

How to Use a Diffuser:

If you've never diffused oils before, all you have to do is get your diffuser, fill to the full line with water and then add 6 drops of oils. Most diffusers vary in size and time, so be sure to read the instructions. Some even have some really neat lighting options. If you want to get started with a diffuser, we can help you!

How to Clean:

You'll want to clean about once a week or in between strong blend changes.

  1. Turn off and unplug your diffuser.

  2. Wipe out the reservoir with a wet cotton cloth.

  3. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and clean the ultrasonic plate to remove any extra buildup.

  4. Rinse the reservoir with water; then wipe it clean and dry up excess water with a soft cloth.

  5. Add water and essential oils; then diffuse away!

Topically

You can apply oils to vitaflex points for the male and female reproductive systems; these vitaflex points for males is the outer left ankle. For women, it's the outer right ankle. The brain's vitaflex points are the thumb and big toe. You can also use them in other places too. No matter where you apply them, they will absorb into your bloodstream within 26 seconds and within 2 minutes reach every cell in your body.

NOTE: When using an essential oil for the first time, make sure and dilute it with a carrier oil such as coconut or olive oil, and apply it to your forearm to see how you like it before adding it to any sensitive areas. If your skin is irritated at any length either dilute the oil more or avoid that oil altogether.

Never use UNDILUTED HOT oils such as Thieves, Lemongrass, Peppermint, and Panaway, on sensitive areas. If you feel too much heat, simply apply more carrier oil to the area. - GROworkspace

Internal

"Young Living oils are PURE, which means they are GRAS - Generally Regarded As Safe for consumption. In the US, the YL internal/dietary line is called the vitality line. The vitality line has labels and directions indicating they are for internal consumption."- GROworkspace

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please do your own research about these products if you are pregnant to determine if you feel comfortable using them.

Alarm Points

"Essential oils are specially distilled plant essences. They hold vibrational frequencies which gently shift emotional patterns. Smelling specific essential oils releases cellular memory; placing the oils on your acupuncture alarm points accesses these patterns on their deepest level, i.e., the limbic system of your brain. By feeling the emotion, experiencing the other side of the emotion and finding a "way out," you can successfully reprogram your DNA, thereby releasing the pattern from cellular memory." -Carolyn L. Mein, D.C.

You will be using these body alarm point charts to pin point where you need to apply the oils to use these methods. Refer back to these at any point. We will refer to these by letters A-H (in the order below the first will be "A" and the last "H").

Anyone else have an emotional teenager?!

"It’s no secret that teens are emotional. Lots of changes are going on in their bodies. They are transitioning from childhood into adulthood and often struggle with being dependent on their parents while having a strong desire to be independent. They may also feel overwhelmed by the emotional and physical changes they are experiencing.

Communicating your love for your child is an effective way to help your teen during difficult life changes.

TOOLS

Giving teenagers tools to release unwanted emotions can be very helpful in creating an emotionally healthy teen, allowing them to feel and process in a healthy manner.

Movement can be used in various forms of intensity to work through or release different emotions. Many people find high-intensity fitness, such as running or sports like boxing, successful in releasing stressors and frustration, while others may find slow intentional movement, like yoga, great for releasing anxious feelings and cultivating a sense of peace.

Marianne Williamson

In a life full of relationships, there will be many times we need to forgive. When we are bothered by the actions of others in our past, we are filled with anger, hate, resentment, and emotional pain. Forgiveness is a way to release all of those negative emotions from your inner body and begin the healing process. One useful technique is to combine deep breathing while inhaling Forgiveness essential oil.
