Kids + Oils

When your kiddo gets sick with a cough or cold, as Mama, you just want to make them feel better, to help ease their symptoms.

We look to natural solutions rather than those all-in-one drugstore cough and cold meds. “Over-the-counter medications aren’t really recommended for kids,” says Hoda Mankal, a primary-care nurse practitioner in Ottawa. “There’s no evidence that they work, and they can actually have some harmful side effects.” These side effects may include an increased or uneven heart rate, sleeplessness, drowsiness, nausea, constipation and slow or shallow breathing. Health Canada doesn’t recommend using over-the-counter cough and cold meds for kids under the age of six! Because I know better now, I am doing better for the sweet babies.

Using essential oils on kiddos is not only safe, but a great alternative to either suffering through issues OR using over the counter options that can be filled with harmful, scary ingredients. Yes, you want to be smart and dilute properly, and watch for any sensitivity, but oils are an amazing natural way to support your love's physical and emotional health. Gentle, natural solutions that are HIGHLY effective rescue a mama in need! Essential Oils have the power to calm, soothe, support, aide in sleep and immune health, and more- this is what I base my decision on.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I only use and trust Young Living oils since they are guaranteed pure, and I know where they come from! I know each batch is tested thoroughly and the Seed to Seal difference, this is especially important with babies.

Myth: They aren't safe

Again, I wouldn't trust just any brand for my little one but Young Living and their Seed to Seal promise makes all the difference. Seed to Seal means the from the time the seed is planted until the bottle is sealed, we as consumers are welcome to see the process.

"Seed to Seal is our commitment that helps ensure that with every pure essential oil and Young Living product your family uses, you’re enjoying the benefits of our global resources, industry leadership, and over two decades of innovation. The result? A pristine final product that you know has been created with conscientious Sourcing, Science, and Standards—the three pillars of Seed to Seal."- Young Living

Solutions for the Most Common Issues: Roller Blends

To Note: there is not a "right or wrong" way to combine oils together, and your combination will not explode! BUT diluting properly is essential due to the nature and purity of the oils. You can always do a patch test on babies skin before lathering them in it to ensure they do not have some kind of reaction.

All the blends below are with children 5+ in mind. Please use the dilution chart for children younger than 5, and as always if you are unsure patch test first.

Immunity:

10 drops Thieves + 8 drops lavender + 3 drops Frankincense topped with carrier oil (10 ml roller) (almond, jojoba, coconut, etc) and rolled on to bottoms of feet daily.

Also, diluting Thieves properly and rolling along your kid's spine daily will help keep them well year-round. For those in school, we highly recommend sending them with Thieves hand purification gel for use all day long to keep the germs at bay!

Focus:

Geneyus of course! But what else?!

Cedarwood, Lavender, Citrus Fresh, Vetiver, and Clarity are great grounding oils and a combination of these will aid in your child's ability to focus and stay level- headed while doing homework.

Study Buddy:

10 drops of each Lavender, Cedarwood, and Vetiver- rolled on wrists and bottoms of feet

Back to School:

5 of each Rosemary, Lemon, and Peppermint- rolled on bottoms of feet and base of neck before homework time.

Tummy:

Tummygize of course, or add a drop of Digize to their morning juice to kick start the belly!

Digize can also be diluted properly and massaged directly onto the belly to ease discomfort.

Peppermint is known for easing a queasy belly and a combination of the 2 might be the perfect solution for your little one!

Emotions:

Don't we all struggle to deal with our big emotions? Our kiddos are no different. When talking with a friend she suggested having a feelings chart so they can just point to the emotion they are feeling when they are overwhelmed. Personally, I like to use the feelings from the movie "Inside Out". If you haven't seen it, it is adorable and a great way to teach children how their emotions directly impact their actions. The graphic below is an awesome tool- "who do you feel like?" is the question, and the associated oil in the answer to help them regain some control. Just add a drop to their hands have them rub together, cup around their nose and take a deep breath in and exhale 3 times.

Hormones:

Teens have all the feelings and all the hormones rushing through their bodies! If you don't remember how that felt, let me remind you- IT IS A ROLLER COASTER. And, as a parent of a teen- it's still a roller coaster. One minute they love you and the next you are wrong. One minute you're their best friend the next your dumb. It's not their fault, and IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU A BAD MOM! It's just a season that every one must go through. To help you, help them with have compiled a few blends to try the next time you feel the attack about to happen!

Teenage Angst:

10 drops Peace + Calming

10 drops Bergamont

top with FCO in 10 ml roller and apply to wrists, neck, bottoms of feet

Moody, Cranky, Ragey:

10 drops Lavender

10 drops Frankincense

10 drops Bergamont

10 drops Clary Sage (for the girls)

top with FCO in 10 ml roller and apply to wrists, neck, bottoms of feet

Oh Hormones:

5 drops Frankincense

10 drops Copaiba

10 drops Dragon Time

top with FCO in 10 ml roller and apply to wrists, neck, bottoms of feet

Hormonal Related Acne:

Tea Tree, Purification, Frankincense, and lemon - 20 drops of each

Witch Hazel and Jojoba Oil - 10 drops each

shake to mix well and roll on to breakouts as needed
